Since its re-designation as 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company on 5 December 1985, this unit has seen some significant changes in structure and technology. The mission, however remains the same, "To support U.S. Army and Allied forces of a division size or less with naval surface fire support and naval close air support".
1st ANGLICO deployed to the Middle East for Operations Desert Shied and Desert Storm from August of 1990 through March of 1991. Upon the unit's return, 1st ANGLICO began supporting all four of the west coast MEUs with detachments of 13 Marines organized into a SALT and a FCT. Providing a forward deployed presence on the "tip of the spear" to better facilitate the introduction of ANGLICO teams in the support of Army or allied units in hot spots in the 1 MEF area of operations.
Elements of 1st ANGLICO also participated in Operation Restore Hope from the initial landing to the final withdrawal.
Throughout this time the unit has continued to participate in major exercises throughout the world to include, Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), National Training Center (NTC), Ulchi Focus Lens (UFL), and Tandem Thrust to name a few.
1st ANGLICO has grown to a size of over 200 Marines and Sailors organized into two tactical brigade platoons, a headquarters, and support platoons, with our higher headquarters being the 1st Surveillance Reconnaissance and Intelligence Group (1st SRIG).
In March of 1994, the unit left its long time home at Camp Del Mar for Camp Los Flores, where we moved into 1st Force Recon's previous facilities. Here the unit was fielded with the new SINCGARS radio and the ANPVS-713's, along with several other new types of gear and equipment.
